Labyrinths of Emigration

Here, I aimed to capture not only external limitations but also internal barriers that we may construct for ourselves. These constraints can be even more complex and dramatic than external factors, as they are directly linked to our own beliefs, fears, and expectations.

This exploration focuses on moments when individuals find themselves at their lowest, feeling powerless to move forward. The black-and-white images symbolize the challenges immigrants encounter and the uncertainty of finding their place in a new environment. Although this series deviated from my initial concept, it became a significant milestone in my creative journey, helping me better understand and express the complex emotions and experiences of immigration.

The image symbolizes vulnerability and the desire to find refuge in a new environment, reflecting the complex emotional and psychological aspects of moving to another country. This photograph explores not only the physical but also the mental state of a person striving to find a new home and comfort in an often unwelcoming and alien environment. It is designed to provoke thoughts about the meaning of 'home' and how its perception changes during the process of migration

This black and white photograph of a boy overlaid with children's drawings and Russian text explores the psychology of children and the interaction between a child's inner world and their external expressions. The image shows the profile of the boy, partially overlaid with another, more faded image of his face, creating an effect of multiplicity or a divided personality. The drawn figures and phrases like 'I work like this', 'I'm just tired', and 'I want to play with Lego' reflect feelings, thoughts, and desires that often remain invisible to adults. This project aims to stimulate a dialogue about how children perceive their world and how their internal experiences can be depicted through creativity

This series was not only an exploration of the theme of emigration for me but also an opportunity for self-reflection and growth. It helped me better understand myself and my own path of adaptation in a new environment, as well as realize the importance of freeing oneself from internal limitations to achieve true freedom and self-realization.

This photograph is part of a larger project exploring the interweaving of personal history and cultural identity in the context of emigration. The image combines elements of black-and-white photography with visual narratives: handwritten text and children's drawings overlaid on a woman's profile. These layers not only add visual depth but also symbolize the inner world of the subject, her thoughts, fears, and hopes, expressed in a chaotic and multifaceted format. The photograph is conceived as a mirror reflecting the complexity of internal experiences of a person facing changes in her life and culture. This project offers the viewer a deep dive into the emotional and psychological aspects of adaptation and self-identification.

On the other hand, threads can also symbolize constraints and entanglements. They may represent the very barriers that hinder us from moving forward, restricting our freedom and self-expression. These threads can be as complex and tangled as the challenges of adapting to a new environment and culture. They may also reflect internal conflicts and fears that limit our ability to adapt and grow.

For children caught up in the process of emigration, the challenges can be even more acute because often it is not their own choice, and their perception of the situation heavily depends on the adults who are present. This photograph aims to highlight that children in such situations experience significant emotional strain and dependency on their parents or guardians, making their experience uniquely complex and requiring special attention and understanding

Each photograph in this series became a symbol of a specific limitation or barrier, whether it be fear, insecurity, or a sense of loss. I aimed to show how these constraints can hinder our development and adaptation in a new environment and how crucial it is to acknowledge and overcome them.

his process of self-awareness and self-acceptance can be healing and liberating. When we find our face, we gain a sense of wholeness and self-assurance that helps us overcome obstacles and grow as individuals. It also allows us to better understand and empathize with others, as we realize the commonality of our human experiences and emotions

On one hand, the threads visualize connections - ties to homeland, family, culture, and traditions. They reflect the close bonds that may persist even when physically distant from one's roots. These threads serve as a reminder that, despite the distance, these connections remain with us and influence our lives in a new environment. They also symbolize the quest for new connections and relationships in the immigrant country, the creation of a new support network and friendships.
