Tulchinskaya Maria

Artist Statement

Maria Tulchinskaya is a conceptual fine art photographer and multimedia artist whose work explores memory, migration, identity, and inherited cultural experience. Combining photography with handmade lace, staged portraiture, symbolism, and mixed media, she creates visual narratives that exist between reality and metaphor.

Her artistic language was profoundly shaped by emigration in 2022, which transformed her practice into an exploration of psychological adaptation, displacement, and the search for belonging. Through recurring motifs such as lace, water, ice, thread, and the human body, Tulchinskaya examines fragility, resilience, silence, and transformation.

In projects such as Labyrinths of Emigration, Mermaid — An Emigrant’s Tale, My Japan, and Threads of Life, the artist constructs symbolic spaces where personal experience becomes universal. Lace in her work functions not merely as ornament, but as a metaphor for memory, invisible labor, feminine heritage, and the delicate structures that connect generations.

Drawing inspiration from classical painting, early studio portraiture, Japanese aesthetics, and contemporary conceptual art, Tulchinskaya creates images suspended between beauty and unease, preservation and disappearance, tradition and reinvention.

Her works have been exhibited internationally and recognized by organizations including LensCulture, Budapest International Foto Awards (BIFA), Tokyo International Foto Awards (TIFA), Fine Art Photography Awards (FAPA), and others.

Artist Bio

Maria Tulchinskaya is a Russian-born fine art photographer and visual artist currently based in California, USA.

Known for her conceptual and emotionally layered imagery, Tulchinskaya works at the intersection of photography, symbolism, and textile-based mixed media. Her practice explores themes of emigration, identity, memory, cultural inheritance, and psychological transformation.

Before turning to fine art photography, she worked in fashion and commercial photography, collaborating with clothing manufacturers and creative teams in Moscow, New York, and London. Over time, her artistic focus shifted toward deeply personal conceptual projects inspired by classical painting, minimalism, and the emotional language of portraiture.

Through photography and handcrafted lace-based installations, Maria Tulchinskaya continues to explore the fragile emotional landscapes of contemporary human experience.
